Research -Representation in News Media

How does the current media landscape contribute to a sense of belonging for speakers of other languages? Image: Mohammed Suhail

University of Canberra and SBS are hosting a live webinar to launch pioneering research into how representation in news media impacts multilingual audiences and their sense of belonging in broader society.

The webinar will be presented by SBS World News presenter Virginia Langeberg, providing insights from an Australian-first study, ‘Sense of Belonging among Multilingual Audiences in Australia’.

The study focused on five of Australia’s largest multilingual communities: Arabic, Cantonese, Italian, Mandarin and Vietnamese.

As more podcasts also focus on news, this is also an opportunity for those in the sector to gain some valuable knowledge. The session provides an opportunity to learn how the findings can inform decision-making about social inclusion for migrant service providers, news organisations and policy makers, with a chance to ask questions to the expert panel.

Key speakers include: Rebecca Griffiths, Audience Research Lead (SBS), Sora Park, Professorial Research Fellow (University of Canberra).

Panelists - Jeff Kuan, Executive Producer of SBS News in Mandarin, Nissrine Khadra Daher, Presenter of SBS News in Arabic
Thu Nguyen, Research Manager Multilingual Audiences, SBS.
